Armed with the warmth of her cello, vocals that cut to the bone and lyrics that dance between darkness and light, Monique Clare delivers unfeigned modern folk. The Brisbane-based singing cellist is the current Folk Alliance Australia Young Artist of the Year. Her debut solo EP “By The Stars” will be toured down the east coast of Australia from September to November 2017.

The QUBE Effect
As a finalist in the Brisbane-based QUBE Effect awards, I had the opportunity to shoot a music video with a team put together by the Brisbane City Council. I collaborated with my sister Ingrid Bartkowiak, a beautiful visual artist, to make this video a little more symbolic. The lyrics reference elements of our solar system- the earth and the sun, and over overarching theme is time. She designed a huge clock face, filled it out with planets and moved around the circle in a clock-wise direction to fill the rest out with stars. Having brainstormed, problem solved and rehearsed for two weeks, we had ONE ATTEMPT to make it work! Luckily Ingrid didn’t fall over, I didn’t forget any lyrics…and now we have this!
Folk Alliance Youth Award, National Folk Festival and The Canberra Times article
I’m extremely excited to announce that I will be Youth Artist of the Year for the Folk Alliance Australia. This means I’ll be working closely with them in a mentorship to pave the next stage of my career, showcasing in festivals around Australia and potentially showcasing at Folk Alliance International in 2018. The awards were held at The National Folk Festival in Canberra. It was so great to be back at the festival, and a real honour to perform in the closing concert at the main stage as one of the award winners. It was also an honour and lovely surprise to have The Canberra Times do a write up of the award!
